Leasing as a Sales Tool

Leasing is the Missing Link: A sales presentation without leasing is not complete. The absence of leasing could well be the missing link necessary to close the sale.

Leasing Eliminates the Dollar Barrier: Leasing helps remove the price tag curse and make it easier for the prospect to concentrate on the salesman product pitch. This, of course, implies that the salesman mentions the approximate rental figure early in his presentation, and that he has taken time to figure it out before meeting with the prospect.

The Lease Reiteration: A salesman occasionally and casually repeats the lease idea during the presentation, to get the idea firmly established in the prospects mind. This also reinforces elimination of the “dollar barrier” and reinforces the “missing link” which may well close the sale.

The Price Tag Answer: The inevitable question “How much?” can be answered in terms of selling price and lease rental (a customer will often be sold much easier on a $XXX/month lease payment than $X,XXX.XX + working capital expenditure). Leasing is often much less expensive than other debt or equity sources.

The Economy Leasing Close: A salesman starts to close his presentation by stating that his equipment can be put to work (immediately) for a payment of just “x” dollars, reinforcing that a big deposit is not required and that a heavy capital investment is avoided. This helps close the sale if the Buyer is hesitant about a large capital outlay.

The Qualified Answer Close: A salesman can close his presentation with the one question that prevents an unqualified “NO” answer: “Would you rather buy or lease?” This is an opportunity that only leasing gives the salesman. It also gives a choice to the customer – both positive.

Additional Considerations:

  • Salesman will find it easier to package “top of the line” equipment or include desirable options which a customer may not have considered “affordable” (this is also a good time to reinforce the fact that leasing can include normally non-financing costs such as tax, shipping, installation, software, extended warranty or maintenance service, etc.).
  • Salesman will get full credit of a cash sale (non-recourse in case of Lessee default).
  • Leasing is growing rapidly in popularity. In competitive markets leasing can provide a competitive edge, which allows working capital to be put to use for more profitable purposes.
